Northern Rugby League 1928/29

Carlisle

It quickly became evident that the Carlisle area's appetite was for association football. With Carlisle United having formed shortly prior to the rugby league club, and having also gotten off to a much more winning start, the crowds were flocking to watch the round ball game.

By November, even United's reserves team was commanding better crowds than the league team could manage. The club asked the Rugby League Management Committee for permission to move their next home game against Leigh, to be played on the 10th of November, to Maryport. This request was denied on the 8th of November, and with their hopes to permanently move to a ground in West Cumberland effectively dashed, the club disbanded the following day.

It was decided that the results of their 10 games were considered null and void, and all remaining fixtures were cancelled.
